Lisa Thomas is also a motorcycle adventurer who has made headlines all over the world. Like Julia Sanders she likes records. Her goal: to go to all seven continents and over 100 countries on her BMW F 650 GS within a single tour. And Lisa is on this tour right now. Her current location: South Africa.

Getting away from it all

Lisa and her husband made the decision three years ago: “We had always talked about quitting our jobs and leaving everything behind us. One Monday morning the time had come.” Lisa – who already had 26 years of motorcycling experience under her belt – said goodbye to her office job: she and her husband sold their furniture and set off on the trip. They have now covered over 100,000 kilometres and been to over 40 countries on their motorbikes. At the moment, however, Lisa is travelling on her own. Her husband is recovering from a fall from a bridge in the Amazon rain forest where he broke his neck in two places.

There is no saying how long the round-the-world trip will last. Lisa has not set a date for the return to Great Britain. She wants to take time for so many things which she missed out on for so many years – when her life consisted of a routine of working, eating and sleeping. “The tour is an enormous test for me – both physically and mentally. As far as I am concerned, it is important not just to visit these countries but also to learn to understand the culture and the people.” So far the trip has given Lisa and her husband amazing opportunities but it has also confronted them with dangers and pitfalls.

But they are determined not to finish the trip before time: “We are sticking to our plan – travelling round the world and collecting as much money as possible for selected charitable projects.”
