Anyone who has ever spent an unforgettable night under the stars in the desert knows exactly what is so fascinating about spending the night outdoors.
For us, there was nothing more pleasurable after a long, tiring day’s riding over dusty trails to put up our tent in a solitary landscape, collect wood, get a fire going and then make delicious tortillas. We often sat late into the night around the cosy camp fire, staring into the flames and looking back over the day’s experiences. We were the only human beings far and wide, only the sounds of nature around us. Deliberately avoiding motels not only made the trip more authentic for us, we also felt a sense of freedom – we could simply follow a promising-looking gravel track up a hill with a breathtaking view of the sunset and put up our tent there for the night. Being at one with the vast expanse of nature, sitting on a rock writing down reflections in a diary, waking up to the first rays of sunshine and then making plans for the new day over morning coffee: it really can become addictive!
