1991-93: BMW celebrates its anniversary / the new flat twin "Boxer" On March 18th 1991, the 1,000,000th BMW motorcycle is produced. It is a K 75 RT which is ceremoniously handed over to the Berlin Senator for Trade and Technology, subsequently being used to raise money for the Red Cross. As part of an environmental campaign, BMW is the first motorcycle manufacturer in the world to offer a closed-loop catalytic converter for motorcycles, as of spring 1991. The standard catalytic converter range is continuously extended. 70 years after the R 32 of 1923, BMW presents the R 1100 RS sports tourer at the beginning of the 1993 season, the first model of the new boxer generation, followed one year later by the Enduro model R 1100 GS. In the autumn of the same year, the R 850/1100 R comes onto the market, and in the following season the R 1100 RT tourer. In addition to ABS II and with the start of the new boxer generation, BMW presents a new, brand-specific and innovative front-wheel mounting system: the telelever. |
