28. September 1923: The presentation of the R 32 The R 32 causes a stir at its world premiere at the Berlin Automobile Show. Up until the end of the First World War, only engines of aircraft, trucks and boats were built by the Bavarian Motor Works. In 1920 the first flat twin "boxer" engine was then built, to be used by various German motorcycle manufacturers. With the R 32, BMW succeeds in moving into vehicle construction even before the development of automobiles (in 1928). Thus begins the history of the BMW boxer, continuing right up to this day - a period of over 75 years. With 49 ccm and 8.5 bhp, the R 32 achieves a speed of over 90 kph with a vehicle weight of 120 kg. It features very safe handling, not least due to its low centre of gravity. In combination with its easy maintenance and well-known reliability, the motorbike quickly earns a good reputation. Over 3000 units of the R 32 are sold for 2,200 Reichsmark up to 1926 - the price is above that of competitor models. |
