Another BMW works racing team After a change in the rules for the German Championship – a new class over 750 cc was introduced – off-road racing was once again interesting for 4-stroke motorbikes. Laszlo Peres of the BMW testing department started with his own lightweight construction and spontaneously won second place in the German Championship. For BMW, this was the starting point for increased involvement in racing, and after a long break a BMW works racing team successfully started again 1979: Richard Schalber won the German Championship and came third in the European Championship. In the following year, Werner Schütz won the German Championship and Rolf Witthöft won the European Championship for BMW. These sporting successes were the best promotion for the BMW R 80 G/S, launched in September of that year. |
