Enthusiasts and mystery models When BMW officially disbanded its racing department in the mid-fifties, there was a change of generation amongst the riders. Young talents such as Sebastian Nachtmann, Kurt Tweesmann and the sidecar team rider Karl Ibscher won several national titles in the sixties. In 1963 the BMW competition machines were given a new chassis which was to become part of the /5 serial production model in 1969. It was rare for a mystery model to be presented on the motor racing stage for such a long time and so openly, but it was also rare for a new chassis to be tested for such a long time in racing. From 1970 to 1972, Herbert Schek won the German Championship three times in succession for BMW: these were to be the last titles for BMW off-road racers for some years, since from now on two-stroke motorcycles dominated the scene. |
